"ENLIGHTENED BODIES" IS A WORK ABOUT HUMAN PERCEPTION. IT TAKES AS ITS STARTING POINT THE VISUAL MODIFICATION OF DAILY OBJECTS: LAMPS. THE LAMPS ARE REVISITED IN A PROCESS OF INTELLIGENT AND PLAYFUL REINTERPRETATION, WHICH INVOLVES "DRESSING" THEM AND STAGING THEM IN SPACE. THE TRANSFORMATION OF THESE DAILY OBJECTS HAS A STUNNING IMPACT IN TERMS OF PERCEPTION PSYCHOLOGY: IT INITIATES A "PARADOXICAL MANNER OF SEEING, THINKING AND FEELING...: A LOGICAL CONSTRAINT OF NONSENSE" (LE MAT), WHICH IS AT THE CORE OF THE ARTIST’S APPROACH. THE ANALYTICAL AND INTUITIVE ARE NO LONGER TWO MUTUAL EXCLUSIVE POINTS OF VIEW BUT COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER IN LE MAT'S WORK.
IN A FIRST STEP, LE MAT ANALYSES THE INDIVIDUAL LAMP FROM A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES: AS AN ARCHITECTURAL CONSTRUCT, SHE SETS IT IN RELATION TO ITS IMMEDIATE SPATIAL ENVIRONMENT, FRAMING DETAILS AS WELL AS REFERENCING OBJECTS AND PEOPLE. BUILDING ON THESE EXPLORATIONS, IN A SECOND STEP, LE MAT RE-COMPOSES THE LAMP, HIGHLIGHTING ITS STRUCTURAL AND VISUAL PARTICULARITIES BY MEANS OF CLOTHING, LIGHT AND PLACEMENT IN SPACE. AS A SITE-SPECIFIC INSTALLATION, "ENLIGHTENED" DEVELOPS A STRIKING CORPOREALITY, SETTING OFF UNEXPECTED ASSOCIATIONS AND INDUCING NEW WAYS OF EXPERIENCING THE FAMILIAR, EVERYDAY.
THE INSTALLATION CONSISTS OF C. 8 - 12 LAMPS OF DIFFERENT SIZES, FORMS AND COLOURS, ASSEMBLED FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS (SHOP, FLEA-MARKET, ETC). THE "RE-COMPOSED" LAMPS ARE PLACED IN A SORT OF INTERACTIVE PARCOURS THAT ENCOURAGES THE VIEWER TO ACTIVELY EXPERIENCE THESE DAILY OBJECTS FROM A NEW MULTIPLE VIEWPOINTS.
COMING FROM A DANCE BACKGROUND - LE MAT HAS BEEN A MEMBER OF BALLET FRANKFURT (NOW FORSYTHE COMPANY) SINCE 2000 - THE PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE OF SPACE PLAYS A PIVOTAL ROLE BOTH IN THE CONCEPTION AS WELL AS THE ACTUAL REALISATION / EXPERIENCE OF HER WORK. WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE LUMINALE 2006, THE INSTALLATION "ENLIGHTENED BODIES" SHALL BE PRESENTED IN A LOFT, INDUSTRIAL SPACE, OR, ALTERNATIVELY, AN OLD FURNISHED APARTMENT. THE LAMPS WILL COME TO LIFE IN THE RESPECTIVE SPACE IN RELATION TO THE GIVEN SPECIFIC ARCHITECTURAL SETTING AND OBJECTS AROUND. THE VISITORS ARE INVITED TO FOLLOW AN IMAGINED PARCOURS, MOVING BETWEEN THE LAMPS AND FAMILIARISING THEMSELVES WITH THE OBJECTS THROUGH INTERACTION. FURNITURE, SUCH AS TABLES, CHAIRS, SOFAS; ACCESSORIES SUCH AS MIRRORS, OR CUSHIONS LYING ON THE FLOOR, AS WELL AS LADDERS STRUCTURE THE SPACE. THEY INDUCE THE VIEWER TO TAKE ON UNUSUAL VIEWING POSITIONS AND EXAMINE THE "ENLIGHTENED BODIES" FROM A MULTITUDE OF ANGLES AND PERSPECTIVES.
THE CREATION OF A SPACE WHICH ALLOWS THE INTEGRATION OF PERSONAL PERCEPTION INTO THE READING OF META CODES CAN, ACCORDING TO THE ARTIST, "ACT TO SOME KIND OF MODIFIED IMAGE, OFFERING A RENEWED PERSONAL DEFINITION".
